A SHORT
introduction

This intensive course provides the practical skills needed to assess and manage injuries and medical emergencies in remote or mountainous locations.

Designed for instructors, guides, expedition leaders, and anyone operating beyond immediate medical access, it meets the requirements of the Mountain Leader (ML), Mountain Instructor (MIA/MIC), and British Mountain Guide (BMG) schemes.

Based in Bykle, Norway, the course combines structured indoor sessions with realistic outdoor scenarios in surrounding hills, trails, and rocky terrain. You’ll cover core first aid procedures, group response drills, environmental injuries, and casualty evacuation techniques in a winter mountainous setting. The focus is on decision-making, self-reliance, and adapting standard first aid to wild settings, incorporating emergency procedures with local mountain rescue services. 

CORE SKILLS
& MOUNTAIN HAZARDS

Fly to Norway, transfer to Bykle. The course begins with an introduction to scene safety and primary assessment, using the DRABC framework. Participants learn and practice CPR, AED use, and basic life support, before moving on to managing bleeding, fractures, burns, and soft tissue injuries. The day also covers hypothermia, frostbite, dehydration, and cold and heat-related illnesses, alongside monitoring and managing a casualty over time. Training is reinforced through practical indoor and outdoor scenarios.

REMOTE CARE
& EVACUATION

The remaining days focus on remote care, beginning with the secondary survey and a full casualty assessment. Participants cover the management of shock, altitude-related conditions, and allergic reactions, as well as head and spinal injury precautions. Practical training includes casualty handling, improvised stretchers, avalanche emergency training and evacuation incorporating the use of local mountain rescue services and procedures. The course concludes with wilderness protocols, documentation, and communication, before final scenario-based exercises and assessment.

IMPORTANT
CONSIDERATIONS

Flight prices: Flight prices from the UK may increase depending on proximity to departure. Transfers from Kjevik (Kristiansand) airport to the hotel base in Bykle are included.
Equipment Provided: All first aid training equipment required for the course is provided. Participants will also receive a course handbook and reference materials.
Instruction/Guiding: The course includes professional instruction. Instruction takes place both outdoors, using varied terrain for practical scenarios, and indoors, where facilities support lectures, demonstrations, and kit setup.
Accommodation: Accommodation is provided in a hotel with en suite shower and toilet.
Meals & Drinks: Meals included in the itinerary are smorgasbord breakfasts, packed lunches, and dinners.
Flexibility disclaimer: Every effort will be made to adhere to the itinerary, but conditions such as weather, terrain, or group fitness may necessitate changes.
Certificates/CPD: Successful participants will receive a certification valid for three years.
Optional/Location-Specific Notes: All permits and local logistics are managed by the Expedition Leader.

NOT INCLUDED

Flights: Return flights from the UK to Norway are not included. Participants may arrange their own flights, or we can assist with flight bookings upon request.
Transfers/Local Transport: Transfers in the UK or Norway, including airport transfers, taxis, or public transport, are not included unless specified otherwise.
Meals & Drinks: Over-the-counter food and drinks are not included.
Personal Travel & Activity Insurance: Participants are responsible for arranging their own insurance covering travel, activities, and emergency evacuation.
Personal Expenses: Items of a personal nature, such as souvenirs, laundry, phone charges, or optional activities not listed in the itinerary, are not included.
Visas/Entry Fees: Any visa costs, permits, or entry fees required for travel to Norway are not included.
Other Optional Costs: Any other costs not explicitly stated in the itinerary are not covered.
