A SHORT
introduction

The Nordic or Alpine Ski Touring Skills course takes place in the snowy landscapes of Setesdal, introducing participants to cross-country skiing, navigation, and mountain safety.

Based in Bykle, each day combines practical instruction with time on the trails, learning to ski efficiently while practicing avalanche awareness, shelter construction, and emergency procedures. Midway through the programme there is the option to test skills on a short overnight tour, either skiing to a mountain hut or building a snow shelter for a night in the mountains. Evenings include reviews and discussions on the day’s challenges, allowing participants to reflect on their progress.

This course provides a fully immersive introduction to skiing and winter skills, helping participants build confidence, competence, resilience, and heightened winter awareness, while developing the ability to travel safely through Norway’s mountains.

IMPORTANT
CONSIDERATIONS

Flight prices: Flight prices from the UK may increase depending on proximity to departure. Transfers from Kjevik (Kristiansand) airport to the hotel base in Bykle are included.
Equipment provided: All technical and safety equipment required for the activities is provided. Skiing equipment includes skis, poles, boots, and wax. Emergency equipment includes rope, pulk (sledge), stoves, cooking pots, gas, first aid kit, repair kit, spare poles, and a satellite phone. A kit list will be sent in advance so participants know what to bring personally.
Instruction/Guide: A qualified instructor or guide accompanies the group for the duration of the trip, providing guidance, supervision, and instruction. Training covers skiing techniques, snow structure, avalanche awareness, emergency procedures, navigation, shelter construction, and river/lake crossings.
Accommodation: Accommodation is provided in two-person rooms in a hotel with en suite shower and toilet, in mountain cabins there is a wood-burning stove, beds with duvets and pillows, self-catering kitchen and larder containing food items for purchase as an option. Mountain huts or snow shelters are used during the expedition.
Meals: Meals included in the itinerary are dinner on arrival to the hotel, smorgasbord breakfasts, packed lunches, and dinners, except when participants prepare their own meals during the mountain expedition.
Experience/Fitness/Age: Participants must be age 14 and above, physically fit and able to carry a rucksack weighing approximately 15kg
for the expedition phase. No previous experience is required.
Evening Briefings/Skills Sessions: Evening briefings cover mountain hazards, weather, avalanche awareness, and emergency procedures.
Flexibility disclaimer: Every effort will be made to adhere to the itinerary, but conditions such as weather, terrain, or group fitness may necessitate changes.
Certificates/CPD: Participants may receive an Adventure1 achievement certificate upon completion. Where prerequisites are met, a BASI skiing certificate is also available.
Optional/Location-Specific Notes: All permits and local logistics are managed by the Expedition Leader.

WHAT'S
NOT INCLUDED

Flights: Return flights from the UK to Norway are not included. Participants may arrange their own flights, or we can assist with flight bookings upon request.
Transfers/Local Transport: Transfers in the UK or Norway, including airport transfers, taxis, or public transport, are not included unless specified otherwise.
Meals & Drinks: Over-the-counter food and drinks are not included. For the night spent in a snow hole or tent, participants are responsible for providing dinner,
breakfast, and lunch. You will have the opportunity to source meals from local shops where applicable.
Personal Travel & Activity Insurance: Participants are responsible for arranging their own insurance covering travel, activities, and emergency evacuation.
Personal Expenses: Items of a personal nature, such as souvenirs, laundry, phone charges, or optional activities not listed in the itinerary, are not included.
Visas/Entry Fees: Any visa costs, permits, or entry fees required for travel to Norway are not included.
