A SHORT
introduction

Based in the Bykle Hotel in Setesdal, this eight-day winter course combines cross country skiing, snow shelter expeditions, dog sledding, ice climbing, and cultural highlights in southern Norway.

The programme begins with alpine or cross country ski training and emergency techniques, preparing participants for a two-day, one-night ski tour to an overnight igloo destination 12 km from the lodge, including instruction on building emergency snow shelters using skis and shovels. After returning to the lodge, attention shifts to a day of rope skills and climbing on frozen waterfalls, and a full day of dog sledding in Heroes of Telemark country. Each participant commands their own team of six dogs through the forest, stopping for stew and hot chocolate in a teepee before continuing the journey.

Evenings throughout the week feature reviews, lectures, and films covering avalanche awareness, emergency procedures, and the historical setting. A highlight of the course is the Heroes of Telemark final infiltration route in Rjukan, guided by local experts and supported with presentations at both the museum and hotel. The week concludes with a group review, presentations of photos and videos, and preparation for the return to the UK.

IMPORTANT
CONSIDERATIONS

Flight prices: Flight prices from the UK (or relevant departure point) may increase depending on how close to the departure date you book. 
Equipment provided: All technical skiing, ice climbing, and dog sledding equipment is provided. A kit list will be sent in advance for clothing and personal items.
Instruction/Guide: A qualified instructor or guide accompanies the group, providing guidance, supervision, and instruction in skiing, ice climbing, dog sledding, avalanche awareness, winter survival procedures, emergency shelter construction, and ski waxing.
Accommodation: The base accommodation is in a hotel and the expedition phase is wooden cabins or igloo with a self catering kitchen.
Meals: Meals included in the itinerary are breakfast, packed lunch, and dinner. For multi-day expeditions or overnight stays in remote locations, participants may need to prepare their own meals in the wild camping huts.
Experience/Fitness: No previous experience is required. Participants must be physically fit and able to carry a rucksack of approximately 15 kg for the multi-day ski and expedition activities.
Evening briefings/skills sessions: Evening briefings cover mountain hazards, avalanche awareness, and emergency procedures
Flexibility disclaimer: Every effort will be made to adhere to the itinerary, but conditions such as weather, terrain, or group fitness may necessitate changes.
Certificates/CPD: Participants receive an Adventure1 achievement certificate upon completion.
Optional/Location-Specific Notes: All permits and local logistics are managed by the Expedition Leader.

WHAT'S
NOT INCLUDED

Flights: Return flights from the UK to Norway are not included. Participants may arrange their own flights, or we can assist with flight bookings upon request.
Transfers/Local Transport: Transfers in the UK or Norway, including airport transfers, taxis, or public transport, are not included unless specified otherwise.
Meals & Drinks: Over-the-counter food and drinks are not included. For the night spent during the camping phase, participants are responsible for providing dinner, breakfast, and lunch. You will have the opportunity to source meals from local shops where applicable.
Personal Travel & Activity Insurance: Participants are responsible for arranging their own insurance covering travel, activities, and emergency evacuation.
Personal Expenses: Items of a personal nature, such as souvenirs, laundry, phone charges, or optional activities not listed in the itinerary, are not included.
Visas/Entry Fees: Any visa costs, permits, or entry fees required for travel to Norway are not included.
